relationships with boys

tonight begins the second night of GEMS. the 1st went very well.

however, when i asked them what badges they wanted to complete this year they all answered, without hesitation. in unison. 'relationships with boys'.

what? relationships with boys. Does that badge even exist (it didn't when i was in GEMS)

so i looked it up at the front of my oh so very important counsellor manual and yes. it exists.
so that is what we are doing tonight - 11 year olds discussing relationships with boys.

i was dumbfounded at first. apparently they have wanted to do this badge since gr. 4 but their counsellors wouldn't let them (....smart counsellors). however, when i mentioned that i was late for GEMS because my husband was in the shower i got a chorus of "ewwwws"

this is going to be an interesting badge!

so i began looking through the badge when i went home and as much as it is labelled "about relationships" it is a lot about teaching the girls self- confidence, self-esteem, loving yourself and establishing your priorities.

yes there will be boy talk. yes there will be giggling. yes i am sure that there will be ackward questions.

but i am excited for the opportunity. 11 is a funny age. with highschool approaching and elementary relationships it should be great fun and could possibly, somewhere admist the kerfuffle of seven girlies, be meaningful, useful & important!

i'll update tomorrow :)

** on a side note. my little brother is 12 (1 grade above). he is one of the cool, cute, older boys (although they vehemently refuse this truth). i have been sworn that i am not allowed to talk about him. i embarassed him a little last week. but i am secretly... well not so secretly now... eager to hear what they have to say.

in my opinion he's just way to cute for the girlies not to notice!

*** another side note: lots of pictures for my cousin erinn. she informed me over thanksgiving that my blog is too blah
